Adding Chat to WordPress
Add your TAB chat widget to your WordPress website. This works with WordPress.com, WordPress.org, and most WordPress themes.
What you need
- Access to your WordPress admin dashboard
- Your TAB embed code (from Channels > Chat Widget > Embed)
Method 1: Using a plugin (easiest)
If you're not comfortable editing code, use a plugin.
Step 1: Install a header/footer plugin
- Go to your WordPress admin
- Click Plugins > Add New
- Search for "Insert Headers and Footers" or "WPCode"
- Install and activate the plugin
Step 2: Add your code
Using WPCode:
- Go to Code Snippets > Header & Footer
- Paste your TAB embed code in the Footer section
- Click Save Changes
Using Insert Headers and Footers:
- Go to Settings > Insert Headers and Footers
- Paste your TAB embed code in the Footer box
- Click Save
Step 3: Test it
Visit your website and look for the chat bubble.
Method 2: Edit theme files
For more control, add the code directly to your theme.
Step 1: Access your theme editor
- Go to WordPress admin
- Click Appearance > Theme Editor
- On the right sidebar, find and click footer.php
Step 2: Add the code
- Find the
</body>tag (near the bottom) - Paste your TAB embed code just before
</body> - Click Update File
Step 3: Test it
Visit your website and verify the chat appears.
If you edit theme files directly, updates to your theme will remove your changes. Consider using a child theme or the plugin method instead.
Method 3: Using WordPress Customizer
Some themes allow adding scripts through the Customizer.
- Go to Appearance > Customize
- Look for a section called "Additional CSS" or "Scripts" or "Footer"
- If your theme has a scripts section, paste your code there
- Click Publish
Not all themes have this option.
WordPress.com specific
If you're on WordPress.com (not self-hosted):
Business or eCommerce plan: You can add custom code. Use the plugin method above.
Free or Personal plan: Custom code isn't available. You'll need to upgrade your plan.
